1st International Conference on Climate Change & Environmental Sustainability was organized by the Benazir Bhutto Shaheed University of Technology & Skill Development, Khairpur Mirs on November 16, 2024. The conference brought together a galaxy of leading climate scientists, policymakers, researchers, climate activists, journalists, and members of civil society for a common cause: addressing the environmental challenges that threaten our planet, especially our country, and working toward a sustainable future for all. Honorable Syed Qaim Ali Shah, Former Chief Minister, and Honorable Syed Asad Ali Shah graced the event as chief guests, alongside distinguished guests of honor, including Honorable Syed Asad Ali Shah, Prof. Dr. Muhammad Yousuf Khushk (Vice Chancellor, SALU), Prof. Dr. Zahid Hussain Khand (Vice Chancellor, Aror University), Prof. Dr. Tehmina Mangan (Vice Chancellor, BNBWU), Dr. Rano Mal, IRC, Engr. Prof. Dr. Rasool Bux Mahar, Vice Chancellor and Conference Chair, extended a warm welcome to all distinguished guests, speakers, and dignitaries, acknowledging their valuable contributions. The inauguration session of the conference was followed by a Vote of Thanks by Engr. Abdul Shakoor Shaikh - Secretary of the Conference and Focal Person of the newly established Climate Change and Environmental Sustainability Centre (CCESC). The conference provided a much-needed platform for open dialogue, knowledge exchange, and collaboration on issues ranging from climate change adaptation and mitigation strategies to sustainable development practices, renewable energy solutions, and environmental justice. Through keynote speeches, panel discussions, and presentations, experts shared their insights, research findings, and innovative solutions to mitigate climate change for a sustainable environment. Enhancing International Cooperation and Policy Alignment Following the inaugural and opening sessions, Honorable Syed Qaim Ali Shah also inaugurated the newly established Climate Change & Environmental Sustainability Center (CCESC). The conference featured several technical sessions where renowned experts shared groundbreaking research and actionable insights: Engr. Naseer Memon: Delivered an engaging presentation on Climate Change and Sustainable Development Goals (SDGs), emphasizing the interconnectedness of climate action and global development objectives. Dr. Muhammad Ismail Kumbhar: Highlighted the Impact of Climate Change on the Agricultural Economy, addressing challenges such as declining productivity and food insecurity. Ms. Shabina Faraz: Presented an eye-opening talk on the Gender Dimensions of Climate Change, shedding light on how climate change disproportionately affects women and marginalized groups. Prof. Dr. Asif Khan: Explored various dimensions of climate challenges, offering solutions to mitigate their impacts effectively. The conference featured two impactful plenary sessions and two dynamic panel discussions, fostering dialogue on actionable strategies to address climate change. Panelists included: Mr. Ghulam Qasim Jiskani, Former Minister of Agriculture Dr. Ayoub Shaikh, Senior Academic and Climate Expert Mr. Dital Kalhoro, CEO, Sindh Rural Support Organization (SRSO) The discussions revolved around the socio-economic implications of climate change, challenges in achieving sustainability, and the need for inclusive policy frameworks to drive climate action. During the closing ceremony, Prof. Dr. Saleem Raza Samo, Vice Chancellor, QUEST, Nawabshah, and Prof. Dr. Syed Nusrat Shah Jeelani, Vice Chancellor, SMBBMU, Larkana, jointly added grace to the event as chief guests. Prof. Samo mentioned, Let us leave this conference not just with new ideas, but with a renewed commitment to action. Let us work together, across borders and disciplines, to ensure that the future we build is one where both people and the planet can thrive, while Prof. Dr. Nusrat Shah highlighted the collective determination to turn knowledge into action and develop practical, scalable strategies for mitigating the impacts of climate change and achieving long-term environmental sustainability. In his concluding remarks, Prof. Dr. Mahar expressed gratitude to all distinguished guests, speakers, and dignitaries, acknowledging their valuable contributions.
